League History

In 1975 the Elitserien was founded and the number of teams was reduced from 16 to 10: AIK, Brynäs, Djurgården, Frölunda, Färjestad, Leksand, MODO, Skellefteå, Södertälje and Timrå. Before that, the sport of hockey had played in Sweden since 1922. In honour of American Raoul LeMat, who brought the game to Sweden, the Le Mat Trophy has been awarded to the winners of the playoffs in Sweden as long as the Stanley Cup has been awarded to the winners of the NHL playoffs. In 1988, the League increased its number of teams to 12, with the first 8 teams qualifying for the playoffs. In June 2013, the biggest change yet to the league was presented when it changed its name to the Swedish Hockey League, during when it was also decided that the league would expand to 14 teams for the 2015-16 season.
