League History

The Swiss national ice hockey championship is one of the oldest in Europe, having started in 1909 when HC Bellerive Vevey became the first Swiss champion. Clubs from the southern mountain regions dominated emphatically in the beginning. The Nationalliga A was founded in 1938 and this period coincided with the total domination of HC Davos, who won 18 titles between 1929 and 1950. The league entered the professional era during the next decade and was marked by the introduction of the playoffs in the 1985–86 season. This was the period of ”Grande Lugano” as HC Lugano won four of the first five championships in the playoff era. The Swiss league traditionally has a heavy influx of North American players and coaches, who have a great influence on the professional development of Swiss club hockey. The league changed its name to National League A in 2008. This season saw the ZSC Lions from Zurich win the first edition of the Champions Hockey League vs. KHL club Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the final, which is Swiss club hockey’s greatest triumph so far. In 2009, ZSC boosted the prestige of the league furthermore by defeating the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks for the Victoria Cup. Since 2011 both the National League and the Ice Hockey Union form the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation (SIHF). In this structure the National League A+B, the Juniors Elite A +B are part of this competitive sport’s sector. The national teams and the referees, who work in the National League, equally belong to this sector.
