League History

Founded in 1975 following its separation from the Finnish Ice Hockey Association, the League started with 10 teams and has gradually increased the number of teams to 14 (since the 2005-06 season). In 2008-09 the league reinstated the promotion-relegation system, which had been abandoned since 2000. With the current license system, licensees who win the second highest series (Mestis) are eligible to apply for a license in the league, given that they also fulfill other criteria (finance, region, stadium and other sports actions, junior teams and so on). The current 14 teams come from 13 different cities, giving the league nationwide exposure and a big fan base.
