League History

The top German hockey clubs of the German Hockey Federation (DEB) played in the Ice Hockey Bundesliga until 1994, when the twelve clubs from the 1st Bundesliga and six from the 2nd Bundesliga came together as founding members of the DEL. The newly-founded league was under the control of the DEB until 1997, and has since then operated fully independently as the DEL. The DEL is fully-owned and operated by its 14 member teams. Each team must fulfill the DEL's basic requirements to remain in the league. As each DEL team is allowed to hire up to 12 foreign players, the DEL currently has the highest number of American and Canadian players outside of North America. The most successful clubs are Adler Mannheim and Eisbären Berlin, who also won the European Trophy in 2010.
